Absent

The apocalyptic rains of January
had not been expected.
The weathermen frowned more than they liked
and scratched their heads with concern
at each morning’s charcoal clouds.

Everyone waded through deep waters
just to get the mail
and tried to remember blue skies.
It was the longest of months.

When it was over
no one wanted to mention January
or talk of rainy days,
but it was only March
when they began to complain
of how dry everything was.
