An Inequality

I’m the girl with bruises down her shins,
the scars like exquisite honors.
This physical pain is nothing
I can’t handle.
I barely feel it.
It’s overshadowed
by inner disquiet,
the pain I can’t ignore.

This severing of us is
leaving me
in shattered fragments.
I’ve never been so fragile
but I’ll hide it.

The bruises may fade
but this throbbing pain seems lasting.
